Yichang Yiling is one of China's three major phosphate-cluster industrial parks (alongside Wengfu in Guizhou and Anning in Yunnan), anchored by Hubei Yihua Group and Hubei Xingfa Chemicals Group, two of China's largest glyphosate producers. The integrated chain runs from local Hubei phosphate-rock mining through phosphoric acid (HS 280920) and yellow phosphorus (HS 280470) to the glyphosate (N-(phosphonomethyl)glycine) chain, where Xingfa's plant capacity has been one of the world's largest glyphosate-active-ingredient sources for over a decade. Yichang's geographic advantage is access to Three Gorges Dam hydroelectric power for the energy-intensive yellow-phosphorus electric-arc-furnace process (similar to Yunnan Anning but with more reliable year-round power supply). Two operator-distinct points. First, Yichang glyphosate has been at the centre of the global glyphosate-generic price cycle since the 2014 Roundup-patent expiration; Xingfa and Yihua compete with Indian and US generic manufacturers for global market share. Second, the Three Gorges Reservoir transit for Yangtze barge freight passes through the Three Gorges locks, which have a pre-booking allocation system; chemical shipments need to plan around lock-slot availability.
