Yumen Coal Chemical Industrial Park

玉门煤化工产业园

Know what the park makes, who runs the lines, and how the cargo gets to the port.

Yumen is one of China's three earliest oil-field developments (alongside Daqing and Karamay; Yumen was first, discovered 1939) and the historical anchor of Chinese petroleum industry. The Yumen oil field has been in decline for decades and currently produces a small fraction of its peak capacity; the city's industrial economy has been shifting toward coal-chemistry since 2010 when local coal reserves were redesignated as the new strategic feedstock. Yumen Coal Chemical Industries operates a coal-to-methanol-to-olefins chain at smaller scale than the Erdos and Yinchuan Ningdong giants, focused on supplying Gansu provincial demand and Belt-and-Road outbound rail freight to Central Asia. CNPC Yumen Refinery continues to operate at 5 Mt/yr crude (mostly imported crude now), but the strategic positioning of the city is firmly coal-chemistry rather than petroleum-refining for the future. Two operator-distinct points. First, the Hexi Corridor location places Yumen on the historic Silk Road route; outbound rail freight to Kazakhstan reaches Almaty in sub-2-week, and the Belt-and-Road preferential treatment applies. Second, Yumen is one of China's smaller chemical-park designations and lacks the scale of the major coastal or coal-chemistry hubs; sourcing here typically means smaller-parcel specialty chemistry or Belt-and-Road-route consignments rather than mass-market commodity grades.
