Xiangtan is the China capital of electrolytic manganese dioxide (EMD), the high-purity manganese-dioxide grade used in alkaline batteries (the only grade that meets Energizer / Duracell / Panasonic specifications, distinct from chemical-grade CMD or natural pyrolusite). Xiangtan Electrochemical Group is the largest EMD producer in China, and the city has been the EMD anchor since the 1950s when Sinopec Hunan and the predecessors of Xiangtan Electrochemical first developed Chinese electrolytic-manganese capacity. The park has expanded into lithium-battery cathode materials since 2018; Hunan Lithium-Battery Industries operates at Xiangtan to produce lithium manganate (LiMn2O4) and NMC cathode precursors that leverage the local manganese supply chain. Two operator-distinct points. First, EMD pricing is highly correlated with global alkaline-battery production cycles; Xiangtan EMD prices typically lead the global commodity market by 1 to 2 quarters because Chinese supply dominates. Second, the manganese chemistry chain at Xiangtan benefits from the Three Gorges Dam hydroelectric power supply (similar to Yichang Yiling), which keeps energy-intensive electrolytic-manganese production cost-competitive versus competing supply origins.
